With the end of the year quickly approaching, I find myself reminiscing of when my husband and I first moved into our new home. We had only been married for 10 months and didn't even have kids yet. The house was brand spanking new and we had no homeowner worries. Heck, the house was clean all the time and thinking back, it was a-mazing!
Fast forward 11 years, 1 dog and 3 school-age children later we are knee deep in homeowner upkeep and tackling day to day maintenance on our home. Our home is still just as beautiful but it's now what I would call 'broken in'. It's home. Our home. I love coming home and realizing we have 3 beautiful children and a home to call our own. What I don't love are the day to day issues that come along with owning our own home. Our dishwasher broke down last year and we luckily were able to order parts versus replacing the entire unit. We also just recently replaced our kitchen faucet. It seems to be little things happening but if we can prevent them from re-occurring I call it a win win.
Simple & Routine Maintenance Tips:
- Take a few minutes 1-2 times a week (does not have to happen daily) and run hot water down your drains in your bathrooms and kitchen area. Hot water will help keep the drains open and lower the chances of clogs.
- Fix leaky faucets as needed and routinely check the drains for clogs.
- Be conscious of what you are putting down your drains. I cook and bake a lot and I hear time and time again that sugary items like melted chocolate and frosting are horrible for septic systems. I scrape as much as possible into the garbage to avoid dealing with major pipe and septic issues.
- Use Roto-Rooter products 1-2 times a month. Roto-Rooter® products are a simple and effective way to avoid major pipe and septic issues from occurring.
