This easy pallet Christmas tree uses scrap felt that you may already have.
It happened late one night. I was laying in bed, and I should have been sleeping. I was scrolling through Instagram and someone had a flash sale on scrap felt. And so I bought some. Right then and there, all cuddled up in my bed, warm and cozy and spending money on scrap felt. Scrap felt. What WAS scrap felt? I honestly had no idea until it arrived.
I was so excited when my felt arrived, mainly because I had completely forgotten I ordered it. The colors were so different than the felt colors I usually picked up at the craft stores. None of that primary bright colors, but muted and much richer greens and heather browns and a unique pile of gorgeous. Immediately I sorted my colors like a rainbow and then I let them sit. And sit. And sit. For MONTHS. I had no idea what I was going to do with those scrap pieces, and for a little while I was afraid to use them. I didn't want to waste them! {{I'm pretty sure that statement means I am a bit of a craft hoarder.}}
Finally I settled on a few projects and one of them is this easy pallet Christmas tree. Now you might also know I tend to have a stockpile of cut pallets {{if you follow here, here and here}} and I like to make things out of them whenever I can.
How to make an easy pallet Christmas tree
You'll need a few materials and can easily make this project in about 30 minutes or less.
- Re-purposed pallet, my pallet board measured 6" x 9"
- Scrap Pieces of Felt in multi colors
- Scrap Piece of Paper
- Clear Tape or Masking Tape
- Scissors
- Hot Glue
- Take your scrap paper and make a triangle tree. My triangle measured 7" x 3.5". Make sure it fits onto your board. (The trunk is not included in that measurement.)
- Place clear tape on the 3 flat edges of the paper triangle. Make sure it extends a bit beyond the paper so the felt sticks to it. Place the tree, sticky tape side up on a flat surface.
- Gather your felt and begin to lay it on top of the tape and paper pattern. You may need to trim some of felt so it's a bit smaller, or make thinner strips, etc. Start at the bottom and move up. When you reach the top, press firmly on the felt so it sticks to the tape.
- Carefully flip over the pattern and cut out the felt, following the pattern, and cutting off the tape. Discard the scraps (Or add them to your scrap pile!) Leave the paper attached to the felt for now.
- Transfer the tree onto your pallet board. Once you are happy with the position of the tree, you can add a trunk by cutting out small triangles to form a rectangle trunk. Remove the tree from your pallet and begin to transfer the pieces from the pattern to the pallet. Tack them into place with hot glue, pressing firmly.
- Once you have the tree and trunk in place, cut out small circles of various colors of felt for the ornaments and attach them to the tree with a dot of hot glue.
